Emo is short for emotive or emotional hardcore. This is a set of social beliefs / ideology and taste.
Emo Music
Emo music is a mix of hardcore punk and metal. Depending on how die-hard on your definition of emo is that it can cover any band that plays with the emotions and / or screaming and / or has an emotional letter. Typical emo bands may include Dashboard Confessional, Fall Out Boy and any number of other hardcore crossover bands - Three times, from first to last funeral for a friend, etc.
Emo music evolved from its original roots, the Washington DC hardcore scene 80 with bands like Rites of Spring, Embrace, Soulside and Moss Icon.
In the early to mid 90's, many people became disillusioned with the music Hardcore, especially in the Midwest, where several bands embraced the idea of a more melodic sound and feel more "emotional". The emo scene and "look" began to build in the public consciousness as the music was popularized by labels like Victory Records success and major record labels began to take notice.
Emo music often includes yelling, mourn or outpourings of emotion.
Emo Fashion
Emo dress tends to follow lines of nonconformity, almost without exception, but individual styles may vary, subject to continued emphasis on second-hand products or general expression of indifference toward current fashion trends. A popular classic emo fashion is to use the vintage shirts or t-shirts popular emo bands.

Emo Hair
Hair is another important area of emo culture. Hair is another place where people can express themselves and go against society for being different. Emo hairstyles tend to be either jet black, highlighted or dyed a variety of colors, but rarely a natural color. It is usually straight with long bangs brushed to one side, often covering one eye.
